Bridgewater, Halifax, Canada * -- Local teenagers in a Bridgewater Development Association's Youth Committee have raised CAN$41,452 ($36,637 in US Dollars) in cash, material and labor towards the construction of a new skateboard park in Lunenburg County. The group says they need a further $31K Canadian to put the project on track.
The group is no stranger to skatepark * development: in June 2006 they created a temporary skatepark on the South Shore Exhibition grounds with the blessing of the locality.
Said Lea Stuempel of the Rotary Club of Bridgewater and District, "We are 100 per cent behind this project." She added that the teenage organizers came to the club with a well-researched and compelling presentation, and that she hopes her organization's support will help the plan to come through.
Connie Jefferson, the mother of 15-year old organizer Marcus Selig, said she has seen her son and other teens mature during the development of the project, including through the organization needed to get this far, and in public speaking.
Reportedly the Town of Bridgewater will provide land for the park, near the fields on Glen Allan Drive extension, as well as $15,000 towards the construction.
