Norden, California * -- Boreal Mountain Resort has added an indoor skateboarding bowl to its existing ski and snowboard offerings.
Being billed as the first indoor skatepark * at a winter ski and snowboard resort destination, the Boreal Skate Bowl was built by Vertical Production Industries (VPI), which has built skateboard facilities for events like the X-Games *, notably the Mega Ramp ridden in the 2004 * games by Danny Way *. The Boreal Skate Bowl is a collaborative effort between Boreal, Red Bull *, and VPI.
Boreal seeks to reach out to families with teens and children by acknowledging the role that skateboarding has played in the birth and development of snowboarding.
"This is a great way to offer kids a wide variety of activities," said Jody Churich, Director of Marketing for Boreal Mountain Resort. "You could be in a snow terrain park one minute and in an indoor skateboard bowl the next."
Reportedly one of the first snow resorts in the nation to allow snowboarding, Boreal also premiered one of the first snowboarding 'terrain parks', known as Jibassic Park, and hosted a World Cup snowboard racing competition in the early 80s.
Eric Rosenwald, manager of Boreal and a known terrain park designer and builder, was involved in the Boreal Skate Bowl's design as well. "It's ironic to have helped with the conceptual process of the Boreal Skate Bowl, because I get so much inspiration for snow terrain park features from skate parks." said Rosenwald.
Resting adjacent to the Boreal main winter lodge, the Skate Bowl rules require helmets, which along with knee and elbow pads and skateboards are available for rent on location.
Hours are Monday through Thursday from 3pm to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Prices for non-members are $5 for a 30-minute session during the week and $7 on weekends. An optional $25 frequent-user membership drops the pricing to $3 for a 30-minute session during the week and $5 on weekends.
