Oceanside, CA, November 8, 2002 * -
Time4 Media’s
TransWorld Skateboarding magazine * will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the January 2003 * issue. The redesigned issue will feature four collectible covers – one for each of the four skaters who helped drive the progression of the sport and played an integral role in TransWorld Skateboarding’s rise to the top.
Tony Hawk *,
Steve Caballero *,
Mark Gonzalez and
Jamie Thomas * will each be featured on the anniversary cover, which hits newsstands on November 19 nationwide.
"TransWorld Skateboarding has consistently delivered the whole of skateboarding by promoting and supporting progressive and technical skateboarding at its highest form," said Editor-in-Chief Dave Swift *. "As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we are unveiling a redesign that will reinforce our historical position as the authority in skateboarding."
With the January issue, the magazine will unveil a redesign that includes a bolder "retro" logo; a fresh, more consistent design across the various departments; cutting edge photography that will continue to define the magazine; and clearer visual differentiation of editorial content from advertiser pages.
The 410-page issue is expected to close with 226 ad pages. In addition, special edit features include an 8-page pullout poster with every cover since the magazine’s 1983 launch, plus a section on the 40 most influential skateboarders who have helped shape the direction of the magazine over the years.
"A vital component of the redesign is a monthly gatefold off the cover, creating an important front of the book position exclusively for hard goods manufacturers," said Tim Wrisley, Group Publisher of TransWorld Media. "As producers of decks, wheels * and trucks *, these companies are literally the nuts and bolts of our industry and we’re committing this prime position to support them."
In 2002, TransWorld Skateboarding saw tremendous growth on the newsstand, with subscriptions and in ad pages. The magazine’s average newsstand sale, from January through June 2002, grew from 95 thousand to 104 thousand, or 9%, over the previous year. Subscriptions were up 46%, from 52 thousand to 76 thousand, over the previous year. And, in terms of ad pages, year to date total ad pages increased 11.5% from 2,544 to 2,839.
TransWorld Skateboarding is the largest-circulation skateboarding magazine in the world, reaching more than 1.8 million teen boys -- one of the most difficult to reach audiences -- each and every month. TransWorld Skateboarding is the keystone of TransWorld Media, the Oceanside publishing action sports publishing division of Time4 Media. The group publishes seven more magazines covering the action sports industry including TransWorld SURF, TransWorld Snowboarding, Freeze, TransWorld BMX and TransWorld MOTOcross. Time4 Media is a subsidiary of Time Inc., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: AOL).
