Anaheim short of youth outlets

ANAHEIM Teen-agers hang out on a sidewalk, little girls chase one another with water guns, and
four children indulge in a fierce game of street hockey using a shopping cart turned on its side as
the goal.
This is the scene on a recent evening in the low-income Jeffrey-Lynne neighborhood, directly
west of the Disneyland Resort. It's a neighborhood with lots of kids and not many options for
play.

The city is realizing that more emphasis on youth services is needed, said Esther Wallace, a city
parks and recreation commissioner.
"I think there's been a lack of resources, and I think the city needs to find the resources, and
they're trying to do that," she said.
The 2001 *-02 budget approved mid-June 2002 * includes $5.75 million for expansion of the downtown
central library, $3.36 million for a West Anaheim Youth Center, $70,000 for a portable downtown
skateboard facility, and $300,000 for a skateboard park in Anaheim Hills. "
