DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS * Arrives on Special-Edition DVD and Videocassette Aug. 6.
They were accidental revolutionaries, kids who only wanted to have a
little fun - and ended up changing the culture of an entire nation.
Nicknamed "Z Boys," they're at the heart of DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS, an
infectiously energetic documentary rated PG-13 about the rise of skateboarding that
debuts on special-edition DVD and videocassette Aug. 6 from Columbia
TriStar Home Entertainment.
Directed by Stacy Peralta *, a legend among skateboard aficionados,
Dogtown and Z-Boys begins its story in a section of Venice, Calif., that
was so rundown it was tagged with the unsavory "Dogtown" moniker. It's
where the Zephyr Skating Team was created - a group of
teenagers who used the Jeff Ho & Zephyr Production Surf Shop as a home away
from home. They started practicing their skateboarding moves in empty
swimming pools, leading to a quest
for the perfect pool and, ultimately, the public unveiling of their unique
brand of athletics at the Bahne-Cadillac Skateboard Championship in 1975.
As the aggressive Dogtown style (and pugnacious attitude that went
with it) began taking hold, the young masters of this new style of sport
became international superstars.
Although the Z-Boys era ended shortly after its members took off on
international skating careers, its legacy remains an inextricable part of
American culture today.
How that culture came to be is in part an exploration of who we are as
a society. And it makes for a one-of-a-kind, disarmingly entertaining and
wholly unique film experience.
