Skateboard Helmet Law Passes In New York- For Kids (Posted 11/25/2004)
New York * State's politicians have been accused of leaving most major legislative business unfinished this year. But they did accomplish one thing: passing a law requiring skaters under 14 to wear helmets while riding skateboards in public areas. Josh Rabinowitz, publisher of SkateboardDirectory.com, said he saw the law as chipping away at civil liberties and parents' rights to raise their children as they want to, and that the law was just another way for government to raise revenue, "like all of these ticketing laws that are supposedly for our safety." Skateboard Helmet Law, More Considered By New York (Posted 6/22/2004)
A bill that would require skateboarders younger than 14 years old to wear helmets passed the Legislature last week. If the bill becomes law, skateboarders would additionally be "required to wear reflective clothing at night ... and could not carry anything while skateboarding that might obstruct their view". Violators’ parents could be subject to a state fine of $50; local governments could tack on a $55 surcharge, bringing the fine to $105. (Full Article) Search *

Casting is partly complete for "Lords of Dogtown *," the fictional take on Stacy Peralta *'s"Dogtown and Z-Boys *". The film is to follow a group of surfers who were instrumental in starting the skateboard movement in Venice/Santa Monica (Dogtown) in the 1970s. Quiksilver Purchasing DC Shoe Skateboard Footwear Company (Posted 3/10/2004)
According to a recent article in Transworld * Snowboarding, Quiksilver * and DC Shoes * have announced a "definitive agreement whereby Quiksilver will acquire DC Shoes". Reportedly the total price consists of an initial payment of $56M in cash, 1.M "restricted shares of Quiksilver common stock", "the assumption of approximately $10M in funded indebtedness", and up to an another $5M over 4 years "if DC Shoes reaches certain performance targets."
