Phoenix, Arizona * –- Deck, a "Skatedeck Art Exhibit", is scheduled to appear in Phoenix, Arizona on April 22nd, 2006.
The creation of "The Molten Brothers", Mike Goodwin and Ken Richardson, the event will feature over 100 "art works created on skateboard decks". The two Phoenix-based artists say they wanted to bring local and international artists together to express their art on the unique canvas of a skateboard deck.
The event is scheduled to show customized decks by Shepard Fairey *, Mark Mothersbaugh, Kirk Ryden, Andrew Brandou, Bob Dob, SEEN, John John Reese, Naoto Hattori, Boxguts, Molly Crabapple, Richard Kirwan, Isabel Samaras and others.
"We wanted to bring an exhibit that would showcase some of the amazing artists in Arizona as well as invite the international art community to see what the growing art scene is like here," says event co-organizer Mike Goodwin. "This is more of a cultural festival rather than just an exhibit," he continued, "the whole day will be filled with live music, food and drink, skate photography exhibits, kid-designed skateboard art, and a collectors display depicting the history of skateboarding *.
"We could not have done this without the contributions and efforts brought forth by Amy Young and Douglas Grant of Perihelion Arts in downtown Phoenix. They were significant in bringing many great local and national artists into the show which made the event that much better. We have artists from all over the U.S. as well as some surprising contributions coming in from various parts of the world. The response has been amazing.”
Entry to the event will cost $3, and most of the art will be available for purchase. Refreshments will also reportedly be available, and Just Because, Apollo Black, The Dames, and Dustjacket are scheduled to play live.
At 8 p.m. the premier showing of Cowtown Skateboards’ new skateboarder video, "Get On the Good Foot" is scheduled to be shown.
Organizers say that a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Free Arts of Arizona (www.freeartsaz.org), a nonprofit organization that "brings the healing power of the arts to homeless, abused and at-risk children and their families."
