San Diego, California *-- Andy Macdonald * and Amazon.com have announced the new Andy Mac Zon Skateboard, for sale only through Amazon.com and carrying a list price of $100, complete-- though it's currently being sold for $39.99.
The board is manufactured from rock maple * deck that has been "cold fused" by Skate One * Corporation, George Powell *'s current company. Powell has been making skateboards for 29 years.
"The idea is to get kids excited about skateboarding," said Macdonald, "The alternative now is if they can't afford to buy a board at a mom and pop shop, they buy rubbish from toy stores. Then they might not be so excited about it, and we've lost that kid as a skateboarder, and he goes and rides BMX."
Macdonald started skating when he was 12, and it's well known that some kids starting as young as 6 or 7.
"They're not going to buy their own board, their mom is going to buy it for them," said the 32-year-old Macdonald, who lives in San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood. "Mom is going to be more comfortable at mass merchandisers. Mom is not going to a mom and pop shop and spend $100, which is what it's going to cost. And then what happens if Joey skates for two weeks and then isn't interested?"
"That's what I'm trying to battle against," Macdonald said. "My board is a pro-level board, but it's designed for the entry-level skater. Kids don't need to drop $130 to get started."
"I want to expose as many kids to skating as possible, whether they can afford a $100 skateboard or not. Everybody from around the world can order and be skating for under $100."
Macdonald claims that the Andy Zon boards are "the same exact board I ride when I street skate. And I even use a modified version of this board in all my vert competitions." No comment was made as to whether the trucks * and wheels * were the same as used in competitions.
"Part of the idea of my brand is getting an opportunity to give back to the sport that's given me so much," he said of marketing his newest business venture *.
It is not clear if the boards and components are made in the USA *, Canada *, China *, or elsewhere.
