According to a report on today's Eupolitix.com, skateboards and other sports equipment such as lacrosse sticks and golf clubs are considered by the EU as "blunt instrument(s) capable of causing injury". As a result, they will be banned from the passenger compartments of flights in Europe *.
The ban, which is to go into effect in February, specifies that passengers will have to arrange to have a skateboard and any other "potentially dangerous types of weapon" to be shipped in the aircraft's hold.
“Potentially a skateboard is a weapon,” an unnamed European * Commission spokesperson was quoted as saying, "Some new skateboards have a sharp edge for example.” EU officials were not able to provide any detailed risk assessment with respect to skateboards as an actual threat, but insisted the ban was based on input from European civil aviation authorities.
But that doesn't necessarily mean it's OK to bring on your snowskate, for example, on board an airplane in Europe: “Law-enforcement authorities will of course still be entitled to confiscate any unlisted articles that, based on an individual on-the-spot local risk assessment, are deemed potentially dangerous", an EU statement explained.
