Students all over Australia * are set to take part in the 5th Annual Human Desire National Schools Skateboard Series, "the largest grass roots skateboarding series of its kind in the world." Proudly presented by Peninsula Events Australia in association with Zours, the tour, now in it's fifth year, is scheduled to travel the eastern coast of Australia visiting 37 schools from Victoria *, New South Wales, and Queensland in April, May, and June of 2003 *. This tour should give hundreds of students, who would likely not otherwise have had the chance, "the rare opportunity to learn more about this challenging activity in a safe, controlled and ... entertaining environment."
According to organizers, schools to be involved in this 'Free For All' series can expect to take part in "Hurley * beginners workshops, which will include a basic introduction to skateboarding, balance and coordination techniques, correct etiquette, safety issues and the new Milo highest ollie competition."
Organizers go on to explain that at each school, "the entire school will hit the gym for the main event, which will feature a lunchtime competition, pro skateboard demonstrations, bands (at selected events only) and over $100, 000" (Australian, presumably total value over all the schools) "worth of prizes and crowd giveaways kindly donated by Peninsula Events Australia, Human Skate Shoes, Zours Fat Free Candy, Kore TV, Fudge Hair Products, Hurley Clothing, Jansport Backpacks, Milo energy drinks, City Beach Surf & Skate Shops, and Freestyle * Watches."
'It takes us approximately 4-5 hours to set up, pack up and transport the skate ramps to each different school" says Event founder and Peninsula Events Australia promoter Paul Harvey. "Although the events are great fun, especially when we hear comments like 'that was the best day ever,' it's still pretty hard work.'".
Australian * skateboarders and schools not currently taking part in the series may be also interested in the three "'Open' State Championships being held at local skateparks *". These open championships are designed to give students from non-participating schools the opportunity to be involved, as well as to give each school's winners the opportunity to compete against "some of the best junior riders in the state".
According to organizers, you can find out which schools and skateparks are involved in "Slam Australasian Skateboarding" or "Blunt Music" Magazines, or at their website www.peninsulaevents.com.au.
