ESPN * has chosen Staples Center in the City of Los Angeles * as the site of the next X-Games * event August 14 - 18, 2003 *.
Many events will take place at the Staples Center, but competitions in bike stunt, moto X, skateboard, aggressive in-line skate and speed climb will be held in and around the downtown arena over the same week.
Los Angeles will be the third California * city to host the made-for-TV event. Seven X-Games have taken place so far, San Diego * hosted in 1997 * and '98, San Francisco * hosted in 1999 * and 2000 *, and Philadelphia * hosted the event 2001 * and 2002 *.
"Southern California * is the action sports hub, and the X Games will reach new heights in the city of Los Angeles," says ESPN President George Bodenheimer, "this is a major coup for Los Angeles. Not only are the X Games a phenomenal event that receives worldwide distribution and interest, it creates a $50 million annual impact to Los Angeles."
The 2002 X-Games in Philadelphia were visited by more than 200,000 fans, the biggest attendance for any X-Games event to date. According to the networks, 62.7 million people watched this year's event on ESPN, ESPN2 * or ABC.
