SKATEBOARD BOOM PROMPTS PARK FUNDS
The boom in skateboarding in Teignbridge shows no sign of slowing down.
Four years ago the district council helped fund 10 skate parks across the district.
Then it was feared the craze would quickly die out and the skate parks would be
abandoned.
But the sport is proving as popular as ever and the council is now looking at
schemes for up to nine new parks.
The council's executive committee has agreed to use money earmarked for
games areas to fund facilities. Up to £2,000 will be available for each project as
long as this is matched by the local community.
Karen Christie, head of leisure and tourism, said: "We have not had many
requests for funding for multi-use games areas but we are still getting a lot of
requests for skate parks."
Council officers and local groups are developing facilities in Abbotskerswell,
Bovey Tracey, Christow, Chudleigh, Dawlish, Kingsteignton, Ilsington, Starcross
and Teignmouth.
