Torrance, Calif. – May 28, 2002 – Perhaps the most prestigious award of the night, the Readers Choice award, was given to Globe team rider Rodney Mullen during the 4th Annual TransWorld SKATEboarding Awards at the John Anson Ford Theater in Hollywood, California on May 23rd. The award, as chosen by real skateboarders, the readers of TransWorld Skateboarding Magazine, was presented in front of a packed and energetic crowd of pros, legends, innovators, and skateboarding industry members.
Although Rodney was unable to attend the ceremony, legendary skate photographer and host of the TWS Awards, Otis “O” Barthoulameu, stepped in to accept the award by stating that, “Rodney is too smart for his own good.” After ducking under the podium and returning to perform his best Rodney impersonation, “O” continued, “I like math!” But leave it to fellow Globe teammate Chad Fernandez to storm the stage and give Rodney his due credit. “If it wasn’t for Rodney, none of you would be doing 360 flips right now,” shouted Chad.
Rodney’s technical innovations have paved the way for modern skateboarding. To get a glimpse into Rodney’s style, contributions, and history, check out Globe’s ‘Opinion’ (on VHS or DVD) or the ‘On Video’ winter 2002 edition.
The Globe team of professional skateboarders includes Rodney Mullen, Chet Thomas, Matt Mumford, Chad Fernandez, Gershon Mosley, Danny Gonzalez, Jayme Fortune, Mike Peterson, Ryan Kenreich, Renton Millar, Chad Timtim, Paul Machnau and Greg Lutzka.
Globe's business concepts originated in the early 90's from the desire to develop an authentic skate footwear alternative for the action sports market. In 1995, Globe's rapid expansion prompted the opening of its Globe International headquarters in Torrance, CA to serve the booming U.S. market. Designed and developed by active skaters and surfers, Globe aims to offer quality products that integrate style, performance, durability and comfort. Globe is also responsible for the launch of Globe Skateboarding, an apparel and accessories line designed for the active skateboarder, Gallaz, the first action sports footwear brand specifically for females and Trans Element, a casual footwear line for the style conscious crowd. Globe, Globe Skateboarding, Gallaz and Trans Element are now distributed throughout the world and additional information can be found at www.globeshoes.com and www.gallaz.com.
