Several thousand people poured through the doors at the Orlando * Vans
Skatepark * on Friday and Saturday for a grand opening celebration that
featured appearances by Tony Alva *, Willy Santos *, Omar Hassan *, Neal Hendrix *,
Mike Frazier and Patrick Melcher * in addition to BMX riders Cory Nastazio,
Rick Thorne and Heath Pinter. On Friday night, Vans had a little preview
party to show off the new 61,000-square foot park and nearly 800 people
showed up to check out the new digs. Even though a lot of people came over
from the coinciding Surf Expo show, there were enough riders with their
boards that some great sessions * took place everywhere from out in the
outside street course to in the giant "Doe Boy" bowl. Neal Hendrix and
Mike Frazier put on a great show in the 40-foot competion half pipe * and
Frazier especially seemed to be excited about having the Vans Skatepark * so
close to his home in Tampa *.
The Orlando Vans Skatepark opened to the public at 8 a.m. on Saturday
morning and was soon packed to the gills with locals who wanted to be the
first to explore the ins and outs of the park. The guys had a great time
signing autographs, throwing our t-shirts and generally hanging with the
several thousand who came out that first day. It seemed that the consensus
was pretty universal: "This place is rad!" From the fully stocked
pro-shop to the ascending four through eight-foot mini-pipes to the bowl in
the outdoor park to Doe Boy, there's something for everyone. If you're in
the area, please stop by the new Vans Skatepark at Festival Bay at
International Drive .... you won't be disappointed.
